Aston Villa have made an offer to re-sign Marcus Rashford with Barcelona’s hesitation over his €30m buy option potentially handing Emery’s side a significant advantage.
- Aston Villa are among the clubs who have made offers for Rashford per Mundo Deportivo
- Barcelona admire the player but are reluctant to meet Manchester United’s €30m buy option
- Rashford has delivered 14 goals and 12 assists this season and accepted a 40% salary reduction to stay at Camp Nou
- Manchester United are reportedly favouring a sale to Villa and are unwilling to sanction another loan
The story so far
Marcus Rashford’s connection with Aston Villa has never fully dissolved since his loan spell in the second half of last season. Emery’s desire to retain the England international was well documented only for the 28-year-old to choose Barcelona over a permanent Villa move in July 2025.
That decision hurt at the time. However, the story has taken several unexpected turns since and Villa are now firmly back in the picture.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Villa are among the clubs to have made formal offers for Rashford this summer with Manchester United reportedly favouring a sale to Emery’s side.
The Red Devils are standing firm on their €30m buy option, refusing to lower the fee or sanction another loan arrangement. Barcelona have until June to trigger the clause. Their hesitation could be Villa’s greatest opportunity.
Barcelona’s dilemma
The situation at the Camp Nou is one of genuine admiration undermined by financial caution. Hansi Flick has approved Rashford staying. The sporting department favours keeping him.
The player himself has done everything possible to demonstrate his commitment, accepting a 40% salary reduction and reportedly offering to extend his contract across five seasons through to 2032 at no additional cost.
His output this season makes the financial debate even harder to understand from the outside. Fourteen goals and twelve assists represents an outstanding return: pace, width, directness, and end product that Flick has built attacking combinations around throughout the campaign.
Finding a replacement with that level of production would not be simple, nor cheap. Yet Barcelona continue to search for a restructured deal rather than simply triggering the option that already exists.
Real Madrid add further complexity
A further and entirely unexpected dimension emerged this week. Reports from The Independent, via Sport, suggest that José Mourinho, expected to be appointed Real Madrid manager following his departure from Benfica, would like to reunite with Rashford at the Bernabéu.
The Portuguese manager worked with the England international at Manchester United and retains a strong personal relationship with the 28-year-old.
However, sources close to Rashford have told Mundo Deportivo that he is “100% focused” on staying at Barcelona, dismissing Real Madrid and a return to Old Trafford simultaneously. That public declaration of intent strengthens Barcelona’s negotiating position in one respect, but also increases the pressure on the Catalan club to act before the June deadline expires.
Why Villa remain well positioned
Manchester United’s stance is the most important factor in Villa’s favour. Old Trafford are unhappy with Rashford’s public desire to remain in Barcelona, with Michael Carrick having stated he is counting on the forward for next season. United hold the leverage.
They want the buy option paid or a permanent sale completed. And they are reportedly optimistic that Villa are willing to meet the €30m demand.
That figure is unlikely to represent a significant obstacle for a club that has just confirmed Champions League qualification and is preparing for a summer of ambitious recruitment. Emery’s track record of unlocking the potential of talented but underperforming attackers is one of the most compelling arguments Villa can make in any conversation with Rashford’s representatives.

Barcelona are playing a dangerous game. Rashford has given them every possible reason to trigger the buy option: goals, assists, commitment, and a willingness to restructure his entire financial package. Their hesitation is understandable from an accounting perspective, but entirely illogical from a football one. If they delay too long, Villa will act decisively.
Emery gave Rashford purpose during his loan spell. Champions League football next season gives him the platform to rebuild his career at the highest level. The door is open. Villa must be ready to walk through it the moment Barcelona blink.
