Who are the potential outgoings at Aston Villa this summer?

  • Aston Villa are expected to be very busy in this summer’s transfer window
  • Sales are needed to fund a squad refresh
  • Morgan Rogers and Emi Martínez are a couple of the high-profile names who could depart

Aston Villa are facing a critical summer transfer window as manager Unai Emery balances squad refreshment with UEFA’s financial settlement limits. As ever, restrictions are tight, so Villa will have to act smartly.

According to Jacob Tanswell from The Athletic, Villa must navigate strict profit and sustainability constraints, meaning player exits will heavily dictate their ability to recruit.

The agreement with UEFA stipulates Villa cannot have losses more than €60 million (£52 million). This limit makes their desire to refresh the squad difficult.

The club are preparing for a busy period of outgoings, split between raising immediate capital and trimming the squad via permanent deals, alongside mapping out developmental pathways for their academy starlets through the loan market.

Here are the potential outgoings at Aston Villa this summer:

Permanent exits

Morgan Rogers:

Jacob Tanswell has stated there is a widespread expectation among sources that Morgan Rogers will leave Villa Park this summer due to intense interest from Europe’s biggest clubs. However, senior club officials at Villa ideally want to keep the 23-year-old attacker, who has five years left on his contract.

He is Villa’s most valuable financial asset. A massive sale may become necessary to fund structural upgrades across the squad, despite a 20% sell-on clause owed to Middlesbrough.

The club are looking towards the £100 million sale of Jack Grealish to Manchester City in 2021 as a starting figure for negotiations.

Emi Martínez:

The future of world-class goalkeeper Emi Martínez hinges entirely on the nature of incoming bids. Unai Emery strongly prefers to keep the Argentine. Crucially, if a suitable offer materialises, Villa will consider a sale and immediately pivot to sign a replacement, with James Trafford high on the list.

Andrés García:

Deputy right-back Andrés García is heavily linked with a permanent departure after enduring a deeply frustrating, injury-hit campaign.

Unai Emery has made finding an alternative to Matty Cash a primary objective for the summer window. García has slipped down the defensive pecking order, making him an immediate candidate to be moved on to clear space on the wage bill.

Kosta Nedeljković:

Fellow backup full-back Kosta Nedeljković is also expected to be part of the defensive clearance at Villa Park. Like García, the young defender has struggled to secure consistent first-team minutes under Emery and is viewed as surplus to requirements.

Leon Bailey:

Winger Leon Bailey is firmly on the list of likely permanent departures as Villa looks to clear his substantial salary from the books. The club aggressively attempted to sell the Jamaican international last year but ultimately had to settle for a temporary loan stint at Roma.

Emery is now prioritising the signing of a fresh, explosive wide forward to completely replace Bailey’s role.

Evann Guesssand:

Crystal Palace previously held a £28 million buy option on forward Evann Guessand, but it officially expired on May 31. Despite the deadline passing, permanent transfer discussions between the two clubs are scheduled to take place very soon. There is also interest from other clubs around Europe.

The Athletic indicates he will wait to see who Palace appoint as their manager before making a decision.

Sil Swinkels:

Academy graduate Sil Swinkels is returning from a temporary stint away from the club at Chesterfield and is expected to be sold.

The 22-year-old defender is at a career crossroads where regular, senior football is paramount. With first-team opportunities heavily limited under Emery, Villa intends to cash in on the young asset permanently.

Tommi O’Reilly:

Similarly, highly-rated midfielder Tommi O’Reilly is expected to be offloaded permanently following the conclusion of his recent loan spell at Crewe Alexandra.

While he has shown flashes of technical quality in the youth ranks, it is believed that a permanent move is the most beneficial step for all parties. His sale would also generate pure profit to assist Villa’s financial compliance.

Samuel Iling-Junior:

English winger Samuel Iling-Junior is expected to sit down with Villa to discuss his future. Another loan or a permanent move is yet to be determined.

It is likely that if an offer comes in that will generate profit for the Villans, they would accept; otherwise they would sanction another loan to attempt to increase his value.

Loans

Yeimar Mosquera:

Young Colombian defender Yeimar Mosquera is primed for a strategic loan move to continue his physical development. Villa’s recruitment staff believe he possesses excellent long-term raw attributes but requires consistent weekly minutes in a senior league. Two Scottish clubs have reportedly made enquiries.

Ben Broggio:

Talented academy winger Ben Broggio is another youngster set to be loaned out once again. Having thoroughly impressed Emery’s coaching staff, he is expected to depart for the Championship for another year of regular senior football.

Triston Rowe:

Teenage right-back Triston Rowe is highly regarded by the coaching staff at Bodymoor Heath. Like Broggio, he is in a similar boat, where another season of regular minutes at the senior level is needed before potentially integrating into the first-team.

Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba:

In addition to Broggio and Rowe, Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba is in the same situation. The attacking playmaker will likely attract suitors from the Championship again. He will be needing regular minutes, given the reduced role he had at West Brom last season.

George Hemmings:

Midfielder George Hemmings is also subject to intense interest. The club is weighing up his immediate future carefully. A loan move to a competitive Championship side is considered the most probable outcome to accelerate his development

Rory Wilson:

Prolific youth striker Rory Wilson signed a new contract last year, which included an initial two-year deal plus a further year that triggers specifically upon going on loan. He struggled for regular minutes in Austria for Sturm Graz, leaving him still short of senior experience. Another loan will be expected.

Mohammed Kone:

Finally, central midfielder Mohammed Kone is being discussed with FC Annecy, who recently became part of the V Sports umbrella. Having played his first season for the Villans in the U-21s, this would be his first stint at senior level.

Ultimately, Villa’s summer strategy is as much about smart outgoings as it is about high-profile incomings.

By moving on fringe players, potentially selling high-value assets, and utilising structured loans for academy starlets, Villa are working to stay compliant with UEFA guidelines.

Successful departures create vital financial flexibility. This wiggle room allows them to bring in the quality required to become a regular Champions League contender.
