Ezri Konsa’s World Cup opener has quickly become an Aston Villa talking point after England beat Croatia 4-2 but still left Thomas Tuchel with a defensive decision before Ghana.
The Villa centre-back started alongside John Stones in Dallas, with Morgan Rogers later getting minutes from the bench and Ollie Watkins remaining unused.
England came through their Group L opener with the win, but Sky Sports’ post-match ratings made clear that the defensive side of the performance will still be picked over.
That is the sharper Villa story than the scoreline alone.
Konsa Now Waits On Ghana Call
Konsa has earned his England place by becoming one of Unai Emery’s most trusted defenders, but tournament football can be brutally short-term.
One uneasy night is often enough to bring selection debate, especially when England conceded twice in a chaotic first half.
That does not mean Konsa should be painted as the problem. England’s wider structure looked stretched at times, and Croatia carried enough experience to punish loose moments.
ReadAstonVilla has already covered how Morgan Rogers earned World Cup minutes as England beat Croatia, giving Villa another thread to follow.
Now the question is whether Konsa keeps his place when Tuchel names his side for Ghana.
A strong tournament would only strengthen Konsa’s standing. Any rotation would say more about England’s defensive balance than his value to Aston Villa.
