  • After the match Watkins discussed his confidence and potential impact heading into his first World Cup campaign

Ollie Watkins has staked a massive claim for a starring role in England’s World Cup campaign after coming off the bench to score in a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Costa Rica.

Thomas Tuchel’s side rounded off their official tournament preparations in Orlando, Florida, in dominant fashion. After an intense thunder and lightning storm, which delayed kick-off by an hour, strikes from Declan Rice and Anthony Gordon put the Three Lions in complete control.

Tuchel made a host of changes just after the hour mark, and then again with 20 minutes to go, to ensure all his players build minutes into their legs.

Watkins replaced Jude Bellingham in the 70th minute, offering more pace and energy than Harry Kane. The Aston Villa striker capped off his 19-minute cameo by nodding home a close-range header after Morgan Rogers’ effort was saved in the 87th minute.

The goal illustrated the depth and options England possesses on the bench ahead of their opening Group L fixture against Croatia next week.

Following his goalscoring impact, Watkins opened up on his role as an impact sub, the brutal North American weather, and the elite mentality brewing within the squad.

Ready to make impact

Speaking in an interview after the game, Watkins revealed his confidence in his unique profile and believes his ability to exploit spaces late in games provides a tactical advantage for Tuchel.

“I think everyone knows what I can do. I bring something different off the bench when the game opens up,” Watkins stated.

“We’ve got so many amazing players in the team that, come 60-70 minutes, if we need to fresh up the legs, then we’ve got more than enough ability on the bench to change the game.”

Dealing with the heat

When asked about how much the heavy rotation and the use of substitutes will matter during a tournament played in grueling summer conditions, Watkins highlighted the benefit of having a deep pool of in-form talent.

“There’s so many players to choose from, obviously,” Watkins added. “Players who, we’re all physically at our best and in goalscoring form, also coming off the back of individuals winning trophies. I think it’s really positive.”

Domestic achievements provide the edge under pressure

The striker believes that the sheer number of winners and elite-level performers within the current England setup gives them a distinct psychological edge on the world stage.

“If you look at the squad, we’ve played at the highest level possible and won in the most important games when there’s pressure on.”

“What better way to go into a World Cup than the team winning trophies and playing their best football individually.”

Watkins has perfectly framed England’s depth ahead of their World Cup opener against Croatia. His goal in Orlando proves he is more than just a backup option; he is an incredibly valuable player when opposition legs begin to tire late in games.

By combining superb form with an elite, trophy-winning mentality forged at domestic level, Watkins believes the Three Lions have what it takes to go all the way.

If England are to conquer the grueling heat and navigate the intense pressure of a World Cup, impact players with Watkins’ ruthless confidence will prove decisive.
