Aston Villa in contract talks with Lamare Bogarde as Brighton circle: “Emery is a big fan”

Aston Villa are in contract talks with Lamare Bogarde as Brighton and other Premier League clubs monitor the 22-year-old’s situation.

  • Villa opened contract talks with Bogarde despite his deal running until 2028
  • Former Villa scout Mick Brown confirmed: “Emery is a big fan of his and that’s why he’s been involved more”
  • Brighton have been specifically identified as interested since December with a busy summer window planned
  • Bogarde made 44 appearances this season, contributing to Villa’s Europa League triumph and fourth-place finish

The situation. Strong position, but not complacent

Lamare Bogarde’s contract runs until 2028. On paper, Villa’s position is entirely secure. In practice, the club are taking no chances. Contract talks are already underway with the specific aim of extending Bogarde’s stay and deterring the Premier League rivals who have been monitoring his situation throughout the season.

As we already discuss here at ReadAstonVilla, in B6 they moved proactively on 29 May, weeks before any formal approach from interested clubs. That timing reflects an intelligent and deliberate retention strategy rather than a reactive response to external pressure. The message is clear. Bogarde is valued. Bogarde is wanted. And Villa intend to make that clear before anyone else gets the opportunity to test their resolve.

Former Villa scout Mick Brown delivered the most specific and authoritative assessment of the club’s position. “They rate him very highly at Aston Villa; the manager is a big fan of his, and that’s why he’s been involved more in the squad this season. He hasn’t been starting every week, but he’s been a big part of the side and the success they’ve had in Europe especially. Villa don’t want to see him go. They’re speaking to him about a new contract and they hope they’re going to be able to reach an agreement.”

44 appearances and growing importance

Bogarde’s 2025-26 season reflected the profile of a player developing steadily within an elite environment. Forty-four appearances across all competitions, half from the bench, half as a starter. His versatility across central and defensive midfield positions gave Emery tactical options during the injury crises that disrupted the campaign throughout.

His specific contribution to the Europa League campaign is the detail that has attracted Premier League attention. Operating in a squad competing across multiple fronts and delivering consistently when called upon in high-stakes European fixtures is precisely the kind of performance that builds a young midfielder’s reputation at pace.

Bogarde joined Villa from Feyenoord in 2020 at the age of 16, progressing through the academy system before breaking into the first team under Emery. That developmental trajectory, from academy arrival to Europa League squad contributor, reflects both the player’s quality and the club’s specific commitment to developing its own talent.

Brighton’s interest. A specific and credible threat

Brighton’s interest in Bogarde has been documented since December and their reputation for identifying and developing young midfield talent makes them a credible and attractive alternative destination. The Seagulls’ model of signing players at developmental price points, giving them consistent playing time, and extracting significant value, is one of the Premier League’s most admired recruitment strategies.

That specific model is also the most persuasive argument for Bogarde potentially choosing to leave. Regular minutes in a Brighton midfield, rather than squad contributions at Villa could accelerate his development in ways that competing with Tielemans, Onana, Kamara and potential new arrivals cannot match.

However, Villa’s counter-argument is equally compelling. Champions League football next season. An Emery system that has developed young players at every position. Academy loyalty that the club explicitly values and rewards. And a new contract that demonstrates genuine institutional commitment rather than simply contractual retention.

The broader context. Keeping the best graduates

Mick Brown’s observation about Villa’s broader academy graduation philosophy adds important context. “Keeping the best academy graduates at the club is always a priority; a lot of them have been allowed to move on. It’s good to have players like that around the club, especially when they’re playing well.”

That specific acknowledgement that Villa has historically allowed promising academy graduates to leave, reflects a recruitment philosophy that Emery has been actively working to reverse. Bogarde’s contract extension represents that philosophy in practice.

ReadAstonVilla Verdict

Bogarde’s situation is one of the summer’s most quietly important retention battles. He is not a global superstar, but he is a versatile, developing, academy-produced midfielder who has contributed to a historic season. Champions League football. A manager who rates him highly. A new contract that demonstrates commitment. Give him the deal, give him the Champions League platform, and give him the minutes that justify staying. Brighton will keep watching. Villa must keep him.

matchday.
