- Unai Emery is hoping to avoid the troubles Aston Villa faced at the beginning of the 2025/26 season
- The Premier League’s PSR and UEFA’s SCR heavily restricted Villa’s financial freedom in the trasnfer window
- With Champions League football there is likely to be some wiggle room that will enable Emery to improve his squad
Aston Villa boss Unai Emery is hoping to have a trouble-free summer transfer window after last year’s difficulties with the financial rules. Villa were heavily restricted on what they could spend, which carried a low mood into the beginning of the season, where they failed to win any of their first six games in all competitions.
The Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and UEFA’s Squad Cost Rules (SCR) prevented the Villans from making big moves.
Evann Guessand signed from Nice for £30 million as Villa’s only “marquee” signing. They also signed Marco Bizot in a low-cost deal, whilst Victor Lindelöf joined on a free transfer, rounding out their permanent signings.
Villa then brought in Jadon Sancho and Harvey Elliott on loan on deadline day, amidst clear noise that the lack of freedom to improve the squad frustrated the club.
To make matters worse, financial rules forced them to sell academy product Jacob Ramsey for £40 million to Newcastle United to aid compliance.
This dampened mood carried into the beginning of the season, where they failed to score in their first four league games, and also did not win any of their opening five.
However, throughout the rest of the campaign, Villa managed to recover, finishing in fourth place and winning the Europa League, ending their 30-year wait for a major trophy. Overall, it was an incredible, history-making season.
Emery hoping to kick on
In an interview with the Express & Star, Emery made his feelings clear on the upcoming transfer window.
“We had some troubles at the beginning of the season, which, hopefully, this year we are not going to have. How we reacted this season, to finish in the top-five, makes sense of our way here.
“If we are frustrated and not getting the balance, it is a problem. Of course, we got the balance, myself and the club.
“But we must also teach our supporters the ambition, and if we are not getting there as well, keep balance.”

Villa’s ability to consistently compete towards the top of the Premier League and Europe, despite facing financial restraints, shows the outstanding management of Emery.
Despite a rocky, scoreless opening month, the historic Europa League triumph and top-four finish transformed the outlook of the entire squad and club. The resilience displayed to overcome the challenges and still continue their upward trajectory was incredible.
Now, the focus shifts to a crucial summer window. With the backing of the owners and the potential of a trouble-free market, Villa will be hoping they can finally bridge the gap once more to the elite and cement their status as permanent Champions League contenders.
