- Paul Lambert has praised Aston Villa’s transformation under Unai Emery
- He stated there is “zero comparison” between the team’s current success and his own tenure at the club
- Lambert owed it down Villa’s current owners, who have created a fantastic foundation for Emery to build on
Former Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert is pleased to see where the club is now compared to the horrid days when he was managing the club under the ownership of Randy Lerner.
Lambert took charge of Villa in 2012 during a period of severe financial restraint and boardroom transition. Tasked with keeping a cost-cutting squad in the Premier League, the Scottish manager faced immense pressure from supporters while operating with his hands tied behind his back by an owner eager to exit.
Randy Lerner, an American billionaire who bought the club in 2006, had initially invested heavily under Martin O’Neill, achieving three consecutive sixth-place finishes.
However, following the collapse of those European ambitions, Lerner completely shifted strategy, significantly reducing spending and looking for a buyer. By the time Lambert arrived, Lerner’s priority was keeping the club in the Premier League on a shoestring budget while actively trying to sell it.
Lambert essentially served as a shield for the Villans during this period, absorbing public criticism while privately managing a squad that was being stripped of its best assets to reduce the wage bill.
His departure in 2015 marked the lowest point of a downward spiral under Lerner’s increasingly distant leadership, culminating in the club’s relegation in 2016 and making Villa’s modern rise under new investment even more astonishing.
“It’s great to see”
In an interview with the Birmingham Mail, the 56-year-old reflected on the stark contrast between his difficult tenure and the club’s current high-flying status under Emery. He made it clear that the two eras belong to completely different worlds.
“There’s no comparison,” Lambert stated firmly. “There’s absolutely zero comparison, and it’s great to see the club the way it should be. The fan base it’s got, the stadium, the training ground, the manager, it’s all fantastic for them.
“Unai Emery has been a revelation for the club. It’s amazing because when he went to Arsenal, everybody thought he’s no good, but then he does fantastically well with Sevilla and does unbelievably with Aston Villa.
“I always think if the infrastructure is really good above you, then you’ve got a chance.
“When I was at Villa, I knew the situation was that we’re going to have to sell people to get money in, and the owner wanted to sell the club. So it became so difficult, and you can never say anything in public because it just creates a fire really.
“Whereas now I think there’s a lot of unity. Similar to what I say about Celtic, if there’s unity, it’s an incredible club. Aston Villa have unity, and it’s also an incredible club.
“So, I just think that I can I could never compare Aston Villa now to Aston Villa when I was there.”

Lambert’s reflections serve as a powerful reminder of how far Villa has travelled. While his own era was built by survival, budget cuts, and constant uncertainty, the modern Villa is built on ambition, elite infrastructure and absolute unity.
By contrasting his painful past realities with Emery’s vibrant present, Lambert highlights that Villa has finally reclaimed their rightful place among football’s elite.
