Zépiqueno Redmond – The forgotten Aston Villa man who has been hampered by injuries

  • Injuries have hampered his progress

Zépiqueno Redmond is something of a forgotten man at Aston Villa. Signing for the club last summer on a free transfer from Feyenoord, there was little known about him, and now injuries have drastically derailed his progress.

Initially, it was expected for him to learn in the U-21s and build up his experience in the English game. He joined with little first-team football, having only made nine appearances for Feyenoord in the 2024/25 season, scoring two goals. Mainly, he played in their youth setup and earned international caps for the Netherlands’ U-19, U-18, U-17, and U-16 teams.

However, Huddersfield Town made a season-long loan offer, and Villa accepted. The 19-year-old forward featured just three times in all competitions, scoring one goal. His last appearance came on the 24th September 2025, against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, where he picked up a knee injury, which subsequently ruled him out for three months.

In January, both clubs mutually agreed that the Villans would recall him from his loan, to finish his rehab and seek another move. Top-end League One teams, and some Championship sides, showed strong interest.

Unfortunately, Redmond’s bad luck continued. He looked likely to be heading to Sheffield Wednesday, but suffered a recurrence of his knee injury, 20 minutes into a training session. Therefore, he had to remain at Villa.

What’s next for him?

The priority for the Dutchman will be to get back fully fit in time for pre-season. His confidence is probably low, and he will need some minutes under his belt to increase his match sharpness.

Once Unai Emery has evaluated him, with Redmond likely to feature in some of Villa’s pre-season fixtures, the expectation will be for him to go out on loan again. Ollie Watkins, Tammy Abraham, and Brian Madjo would all be above him in the pecking order, and he hasn’t had enough experience at first-team level to contend with them yet.

But his talent remains. He has explosive power, speed, and physicality, although he obviously still requires some fine-tuning. A Championship side will suit him best, especially one that guarantees him starts and plays football similar to Villa.

Ultimately, Redmond’s immediate future hinges on a successful summer recovery. While injuries have temporarily stalled his progression, his raw technical talent remains undeniable, or Villa wouldn’t have signed him in the first place.

Pre-season training at Bodymoor Heath offers the perfect platform to rebuild both physical resilience and mental confidence under Emery’s effective guidance. With Villa’s senior attacking ranks heavily fortified, a carefully selected loan move to an ambitious Championship side is the logical next step.

This tactical reset will provide the regular first-team minutes Redmond desperately needs to finally kickstart his English football career.
