Aston Villa travel to the Emirates Stadium to face Premier League leaders Arsenal on Wednesday evening and Steven Gerrard confirmed in Tuesday’s pre-match press conference that Tyrone Mings should be available for selection.
The 29-year-old missed Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to West Ham United due to illness, but Gerrard said he completed a light training session on Monday and was expected to return to full training on Tuesday, ready to face Arsenal on Wednesday. It’s unlikely Mings would start, however.
Ezri Konsa partnered Calum Chambers against West Ham and both players put in good performances despite the result, so Gerrard might keep them at centre-back. Mings won’t be 100% as he’s only undergoing his first full session on Tuesday, so it would be throwing him in the deep end if he were to start.
Chambers hasn’t played a lot of football but was arguably Villa’s best performer on the weekend. Konsa has been a more reliable defender than Mings too, so the decision makes sense. Diego Carlos isn’t expected back until 2023 and Kortney Hause is on loan at Watford, so Villa could probably do with another centre-back in the first-team.
