Despite Villa’s defeat at the weekend, it was assumed that Di Matteo’s side would find it easier against Luton Town in the first round of the EFL Cup.

Villa started brightly against the League Two side, hitting the woodwork twice in the opening stages of the game as Di Matteo’s side took the game to their opponents.

Jordan Ayew put Villa in front in the 13th minute, his scuffed shot somehow finding it’s way into the back of the net.

From there on however, it was like watching Villa last season. Micah Richards, Jores Okore and Alan Hutton provided reminders as to why they should be no-where near the first-team, as Villa collapsed and found themsleves 2-1 down in the 53rd minute.

Luton’s third was comical, with Jores Okore directing the ball into the back of his own net despite being under no pressure.
