Council leader calls for Aston Villa rename

City Council leader Mike Whitby is calling on Aston Villa to be renamed to include the City name “Birmingham”, according to reports from the Birmingham Mail.

The motion is set to infuriate Aston Villa and Birmingham City supporters 10 fold, but the City Council Leader has spoke of its benefits, like connecting the brand of Aston Villa and the City of Birmingham together, helping internationals better understand where Aston Villa play their football.

Whitby speaks of Manchester United when explaining his point, stating that no international fan has an issue defining where Manchester United play thanks to the club name.

Councillor Whitby is planning to raise the issue with Chairman and Owner Randy Lerner, if the American business tycoon follows the Council leaders advice Aston Villa fans could see their club be renamed to “Aston Villa Birmingham” and it surely wouldn’t make the current Chairman any more popular than he already is.
